Official Press Release

Kidogo is amongst the 6 pioneering projects advancing education worldwide selected by the Qatar Foundation initiative

Doha, Qatar, September 15th, 2022 – Kidogo and its work towards early childhood development and women empowerment has been recognized by the 2022 WISE Awards. Since 2009, the WISE Awards have highlighted and rewarded projects addressing global educational challenges that have the potential to set international standards and best practices worldwide. In addition to visibility and networking opportunities as part of the WISE Community, each winner receives $20,000 (US).

In Kenya’s informal settlements, working mothers are often faced with a difficult choice: pulling an older sibling out of school to care for their younger ones or leaving their children in an informal unlicensed daycare, putting them at risk in the most important years of their lives.

Through their Childcare Social Franchising program, Kidogo identifies, trains and supports female entrepreneurs (“Mamapreneurs”) to start and grow their own early childhood education centers, enabling young children to receive quality, affordable education and care. Today, Kidogo is the largest childcare network in Kenya, with 750+ franchises reaching ~16,000 children.

Sabrina Habib, Chief Exploration Officer, Kidogo reacted: “Thank you to the WISE Awards for selecting Kidogo as an award recipient - we are so honoured. We look forward to bringing increased visibility to the 350 million children worldwide who lack access to quality, affordable childcare.”

Stavros N. Yiannouka, CEO of WISE commented: “The work celebrated by the WISE Awards is important in spotlighting new possibilities offered by innovation in education, with each of the six 2022 WISE Awards winners demonstrating new and proven solutions to key education challenges within their communities and beyond.

Whether enabling access to quality early childhood education, empowering youth through climate action, instilling wellbeing practices across schools, and more, these winning projects are actively transforming young lives and empowering communities to take action in the face of today's most heightened challenges".

The winners of the WISE Awards will be celebrated in Doha in an exclusive ceremony held during the upcoming Doha Learning Days (DLD) festival in 2023.
